Free asthma screening week announced in Mangaluru hospital

The Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute has announced a free asthma screening week from May 4 to May 9 in observance of World Asthma Day, aiming to improve awareness, early detection, and treatment of asthma.

The initiative will offer free consultations with pulmonology specialists, along with discounted diagnostic tests for patients requiring further evaluation. The hospital said spirometry tests, which assess lung function and detect airway obstruction, will be available at a 50% discount during the campaign period.

Consultant pulmonologist Dr. Keerthan Ganapathi said the programme is focused on identifying asthma triggers, improving correct medication use, and ensuring better long-term disease management. He emphasised the importance of early diagnosis and awareness in controlling respiratory conditions.

The screening week is open to individuals experiencing breathing difficulties, chronic cough, allergies, smokers and former smokers, and those exposed to dust, pollution, or chemical environments. People with a family history of asthma or allergies are also encouraged to participate.

Advanced diagnostic services such as Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT), Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) testing, and skin prick tests will also be available to support accurate diagnosis in complex cases.

Officials said prior appointment is mandatory, and interested individuals can register via the hospital contact number provided.

The hospital stated that the initiative is part of its broader commitment to accessible and affordable healthcare, with a focus on respiratory diseases that are increasingly common due to environmental and lifestyle factors.

World Asthma Day will be observed on May 5, highlighting global efforts to improve asthma care and awareness.
