A shocking theft has been reported from a temple in Dharwad district, where unidentified miscreants broke into the premises and stole silver ornaments from a deity idol in Lakamapura village. The incident, which occurred late, has sparked concern among devotees and prompted an intensive police investigation. According to reports, the theft took place at the Basavanna temple in Lakamapura village of Dharwad taluk. The accused allegedly broke open the lock of the temple under the cover of darkness and entered the sanctum area. Once inside, they targeted the idol of Lord Basava and made away with silver ornaments weighing more than one kilogram. The act is believed to have been carried out in a planned manner, indicating prior knowledge of the temple’s layout and security conditions.
The crime came to light early Tuesday morning when priests arrived at the temple to perform routine rituals. They were shocked to find the temple doors damaged and ornaments missing from the idol. The priests immediately informed local residents, and the matter was reported to the Garaga police station without delay. News of the theft quickly spread across nearby areas, drawing anxious villagers and devotees to the temple premises.
Police officials responded swiftly to the incident. Circle Police Inspector Shivayogi Lohar and Police Sub-Inspector Sidramappa Unnada visited the spot along with their team. A dog squad and fingerprint experts were also brought in to assist with the investigation. The team conducted a detailed inspection of the scene, collecting possible evidence and clues that could help identify the culprits.
Authorities have registered a case and launched a manhunt to trace those responsible. Police sources stated that multiple angles are being examined, including the possibility of involvement of habitual offenders or individuals familiar with the temple. Efforts are also underway to track the stolen silver ornaments in nearby markets and scrap channels.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of religious institutions in rural areas. Local residents have urged authorities to enhance surveillance measures, including installation of security cameras and regular patrols, to prevent such incidents in the future.
