Late fire response sparks fury in Udupi

Fire Safety System Fail

UDUPI

A massive fire tore through a commercial complex near the City Bus Stand, leaving local business owners in ruins and the public fuming over a delayed emergency response. The blaze targeted mobile retail shops, destroying stock worth crores of rupees and wiping out the primary livelihoods of several local families.

The source of the community’s outrage lies in the timing of the rescue. Although the fire station in Kinnimulki is located less than two kilometers from the scene, witnesses claim it took firefighters nearly forty-five minutes to arrive. Traders argue that this nearly hour-long wait allowed the small flames to transform into an uncontrollable inferno. “This negligence cannot be repeated,” stated Vivek G. Suvarna, president of the Udupi Mobile Retail Association, who is now demanding a high-level investigation into the lapse.

Groups like the Solidarity Youth Movement have joined the call for justice, urging the district administration to provide immediate compensation to the distressed shopkeepers. The incident has exposed serious gaps in the city’s safety protocols. Critics are now pointing out that many commercial buildings lack proper fire equipment or even accessible roads for emergency vehicles.

In the wake of the tragedy, the public is calling for mandatory fire safety training and the modernization of the fire department’s technology. As the smoke clears, the focus remains on holding officials accountable to ensure that a short distance never again results in such a long and costly wait for help.
