A free rabies vaccination camp for pets and stray dogs was held at Madyar, Kotekar in Mangaluru on the occasion of World Veterinary Day 2026, highlighting the importance of animal health and public safety.

Inaugurating the programme, MP Capt Brijesh Chowta said harmony among humans, animals, and nature is essential for maintaining societal balance. He stressed that coexistence with all forms of life is key to a healthy and stable society.

The event was organised by the Karnataka Veterinary Association (Dakshina Kannada unit), Feed Animals Save Animals Trust Mangaluru, Astra Group, and local community organisations with support from several social groups.

Chowta said earlier generations lived in closer connection with nature, and modern society must revive that balance through responsible behaviour, tree plantation, and animal care. He also urged pet owners to ensure timely vaccination and awareness about diseases like rabies.

Veterinary experts highlighted the importance of animal health in ensuring public health. They noted that diseases such as rabies can spread from animals to humans, making vaccination crucial. Officials also said thousands of dog bite cases are reported monthly, with a large share linked to pet dogs.

Experts added that continuous vaccination under national disease control programmes has helped reduce livestock diseases since 2019. They emphasised that food safety and security depend heavily on healthy livestock systems.

Animal welfare activists and local leaders also participated in the programme, encouraging responsible pet ownership and community awareness on rabies prevention.

The camp saw participation from pet owners who brought dogs and cats for vaccination, reflecting growing awareness of animal welfare and preventive healthcare in the region.
