Leaders at the Bhagiratha Maharshi Jayanti programme held at the taluk panchayat office in Kadur urged the Uppara community to give greater importance to education for social and economic development.
Speaking at the event, Uppara community district president Malnad Nagaraj said the community, known for its strong devotion and historical role in the salt trade, also participated in Mahatma Gandhi’s salt satyagraha, contributing significantly to the freedom movement. He noted that despite such contributions, the community remains economically backward and must focus on education as a key path to progress.
He emphasised that greater representation and opportunities in education are essential for the upliftment of the Uppara community. Community development, he said, can be achieved only when youth actively pursue academic growth and skill development.
Kadur MLA K.S. Anand assured that special attention would be given to the development of the Uppara community. He announced that around 15 crore would be allocated for the development of villages inhabited by the community in the constituency. He said 3 crore would be provided by year-end for the construction of the Bhagiratha community hall on the outskirts of the town.
Tahsildar C.S. Purnima highlighted the importance of youth participation in such programmes to understand the ideals of great personalities like Bhagiratha Maharshi, who symbolises determination and perseverance. She stressed the need for water conservation and urged the community to focus on unity and education.
Several community leaders, officials, and representatives attended the programme and shared their views on social upliftment and development initiatives.
