Angry leaders boycott Basava Jayanti in Chincholi

CHINCHOLI

What was meant to be a day of spiritual celebration turned into a scene of protest as community leaders boycotted the official Basava Jayanthi programme. Members of the Akhil Bharat Veerashaiva Samaj accused the Chincholi taluk administration of showing total disrespect toward the 893rd birth anniversary of the philosopher Basavanna. The boycott highlighted a deep rift between the local government and the community it serves.

The trouble began when leaders arrived to find poor stage arrangements and a lack of senior officials at the government event. Protesters argued that the absence of key authorities proved the administration was not taking the cultural landmark seriously. They described the planning as messy and insulting, stating that a ceremony of such high spiritual importance deserved much better care and coordination.

Before the official programme was shunned, the town did witness a vibrant morning. A large procession started at the Sri Mallikarjuna Temple and moved through major areas like Ambedkar Circle. Hundreds of devotees joined the march, offering flowers and prayers to portraits of Basavanna. However, the festive mood quickly soured once the procession ended and the community gathered for the formal ceremony, only to find the government’s efforts lacking.

Prominent figures, including Gautam Patil and Sharanu Patil Motkapalti, led the shouting of slogans against the administration. They are now demanding more accountability to ensure that future public events are handled with the dignity they require. This incident has sparked a wider debate across the district regarding how local officials manage significant cultural festivals.
