In a story of grit, resilience, and unbreakable spirit, Payal Nag has emerged as a new beacon of inspiration in Indian para-sports, overcoming unimaginable odds to clinch gold on the international stage.
Born to migrant labourers in Odisha’s Bolangir district, Payal’s life took a devastating turn in 2015 when, at just eight years old, she stepped on a live electric wire in Raipur. The accident led to the amputation of both her hands and legs, a tragedy that could have ended her dreams before they began. Yet, with support from the local administration and her family, Payal slowly rebuilt her life.
Years later, she has scripted history as the world’s first quadruple amputee archer, recently defeating her idol Sheetal Devi to win gold in the women’s compound final at the World Archery Para Series in Bangkok. Her narrow 139-136 victory was not just a sporting triumph but a symbolic moment of surpassing inspiration with achievement.
Interestingly, Payal’s journey into archery began through social media. Coach Kuldeep Vedwan spotted her potential online in 2023 and made determined efforts to bring her to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Archery Academy in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir — the same training ground that shaped Sheetal Devi.
Initially facing resistance, Vedwan persisted, eventually securing support from district authorities to bring Payal to the academy. There, he designed specialised equipment tailored to her needs, approved by international governing bodies, enabling her to compete at the highest level.
Inspired by videos of Sheetal and even a blind archer, Payal developed an unwavering belief that no barrier is insurmountable. Her journey since then has been marked by steady success — from national medals to international podium finishes.
Beyond individual glory, Payal has also contributed to team success, partnering with Sheetal to win gold for India in the team event against Kazakhstan, highlighting both her skill and team spirit.
A constant pillar in her journey has been her sister Barsha, who supports her both on and off the field and is herself an aspiring archer.
Payal’s remarkable rise stands as a powerful testament to determination, redefining what is possible and inspiring millions across the country.
