NU Hospital has successfully performed a rare kidney transplant using an organ from a deceased donor, marking a significant medical achievement in the region. Senior nephrologist Dr. Praveen Malvade said such transplants are complex and this success makes the hospital a leading center in Central Karnataka and Malenadu.
The recipient, a 71-year-old woman suffering from kidney failure and heart-related complications, had registered for a donor organ. The kidney was donated by a 65-year-old man who suffered brain death following a road accident. His family consented to organ donation on March 1, enabling the life-saving procedure.
Doctors highlighted that timing is critical in such transplants. Police teams from Shivamogga, Mangaluru, and Udupi districts created a zero-traffic corridor to ensure quick and safe transport of the organ. Ambulance driver Yatish Achar played a key role in delivering the kidney within a short time.
Dr. Pradeep M.G. emphasized the urgent need to promote awareness about organ donation, noting that very few people come forward for multi-organ donation. He urged society to support life-saving initiatives by pledging organ donation.
The hospital team, including doctors and staff, was appreciated for their coordinated effort in completing the surgery successfully. The achievement highlights the importance of medical expertise, timely coordination, and public awareness in saving lives through organ donation.
