Digital wave transforms how rural India governs

NEW DELHI

India’s villages are stepping into a high-tech future as the government’s digital platforms reach massive new milestones. Yesterday the officials announced that Gram Panchayats have now routed over ₹3 lakh crore in payments through the eGramSwaraj portal, marking a huge shift in how rural money is managed and spent.

Gone are the days of slow, paper-based accounting and cash payments. But today, the system is fully digital and linked directly to the national financial network. This ensures that money meant for village development goes straight to vendors and service providers in real time. In the last year alone, more than 2.5 lakh village councils uploaded their development plans online, making the entire process transparent and resistant to fraud.

Adding to this digital revolution is an AI-powered tool called ‘SabhaSaar.’ Launched in 2025, this voice-to-text assistant helps record village meetings automatically. It has now expanded to support 23 Indian languages, including new additions like Kashmiri, Konkani, and Nepali. This means local leaders can speak in their mother tongue, and the AI will accurately document their decisions, attendance, and plans.

So far, over 1.11 lakh gram panchayats have used this AI tool to summarize their meetings. By combining direct digital payments with smart language technology, the government is ensuring that even the most remote villages have the tools to govern themselves fairly and efficiently. Rural India is no longer just watching the digital age; it is leading it from the grassroots.
