A proposed public debate between Pinarayi Vijayan and V. D. Satheesan has taken centre stage in Kerala’s election campaign. The challenge, initially a political move, has now become a key talking point as campaigning enters its final phase.
Satheesan called for an open debate on development, inviting the Chief Minister to discuss governance before the public. Vijayan responded cautiously but indicated willingness, stating that the government’s performance and achievements could be the focus of such a discussion. He highlighted what he described as strong results under the LDF government and questioned whether the Opposition was ready to engage on these issues.
Satheesan accepted the challenge fully, saying the Chief Minister could choose the time and venue. He added that the debate would allow people to judge both sides. He also criticised the government, claiming it had not matched the housing achievements of the previous Congress government led by Oommen Chandy.
Vijayan, however, argued that the Assembly is the proper place for such debates and accused the Opposition of not participating effectively there. He also questioned their role in the state’s development.
The exchange has intensified political rhetoric, turning the proposed debate into a major issue. As elections approach, it has become a key moment shaping the campaign narrative and voter perception.
