Blurb: A Delhi court postponed hearing on a plea seeking FIR against Sonia Gandhi over alleged voter list irregularities, with arguments to continue next month
New Delhi
A Delhi court on Monday deferred the hearing on a petition seeking registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi over alleged irregularities in voter list inclusion. The matter at Rouse Avenue Court will now be heard on April 18, as arguments from her side remain incomplete.
The plea, filed by advocate Vikas Tripathi, claims Sonia Gandhi’s name was added to electoral rolls before she became an Indian citizen. The petitioner argued that such inclusion may have involved false declarations and forged documents, and sought a detailed investigation.
Earlier, the petitioner presented certified copies of electoral records to support claims of alleged fraud in the case. However, the court has not yet heard the complete arguments from the counsel representing Sonia Gandhi, and the hearing will continue on the next date.
In her response, Sonia Gandhi described the allegations as politically driven and without merit. She clarified that matters related to citizenship come under the authority of the Central government, while issues concerning voter lists are handled by the Election Commission of India.
The case had earlier been dismissed by a Magistrate Court, which noted that the judiciary has limited powers in electoral matters due to constitutional provisions restricting such intervention.
