Kalaburagi
Karnataka has taken a significant step in addressing diabetic foot complications with the launch of the PRAIAS initiative, a nationwide program aimed at prevention, early detection, and awareness of diabetes-related limb risks.
The initiative, titled PRAIAS Podiatry Reach Across India for Awareness and Screening was formally inaugurated at the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences in Kalaburagi. It is designed as a collaborative national effort to reduce the growing burden of diabetic foot complications, which remain one of the most serious yet preventable consequences of diabetes.
India currently faces a major diabetes crisis, with over 100 million people living with the condition. Alarmingly, a new diabetic foot ulcer develops every 12 seconds in the country, and globally, a limb is lost to diabetes every 20 seconds. These statistics highlight the urgent need for preventive healthcare measures and structured screening programs.
The PRAIAS initiative is spearheaded by leading diabetic foot specialists and supported by healthcare organizations focused on innovation in podiatry care. A key feature of the program is the launch of a Digital Podiatry Screening Van, which will travel across cities to provide accessible and advanced screening services to communities.
This mobile unit is equipped with modern diagnostic tools that assess foot pressure, detect neuropathy, and evaluate blood circulation in the lower limbs. These screenings help identify high-risk individuals early, allowing timely medical intervention and significantly reducing the chances of severe complications, including amputations.
The initiative follows a structured outreach model, with the screening van stationed in different cities for a few days to conduct systematic evaluations. It also integrates advanced technology and data analysis to identify risk factors and guide patients toward appropriate treatment pathways.
Officials at the launch emphasized the importance of awareness and early detection, noting that most diabetes-related amputations are preventable with timely care. The PRAIAS initiative aims to move towards zero preventable amputations by combining education, screening, and clinical support.
With its innovative approach and nationwide scope, PRAIAS is expected to play a crucial role in improving diabetic care and safeguarding the health and mobility of millions across India.
