Tensions in the Palk Bay reached a boiling point as the Sri Lankan Navy arrested seven fishermen from Rameswaram.
The group was intercepted near the Neduntheevu islet on charges of illegal poaching. During the operation, officials also seized two mechanized trawlers belonging to local boat owners.
The arrests have sparked immediate outrage in the coastal community of Thangachimadam. Agitated fishermen gathered near the local Karl Marx statue to protest the frequent detentions, which they say are destroying their livelihoods. Protesters raised loud slogans against the Sri Lankan government and demanded that the Indian Union government take immediate diplomatic action to bring their colleagues home.
Community leaders are sounding the alarm over the financial toll of these incidents. Each seized boat is worth about Rs 40 lakh, and with over 180 boats already impounded since 2018, many families have been pushed into deep debt. “Fishing is our only income,” explained leader Jesu Raja, noting that 90% of local families rely on the sea. He warned that without a permanent solution, the community’s survival is at risk.
An emergency meeting is scheduled to decide on a larger strike or further protests. While India often calls Sri Lanka a “friendly nation,” local fishers are asking why the arrests never stop. They are calling for the restoration of traditional fishing rights to ensure they can work without the constant fear of being detained in foreign waters.
