633 fall ill in Osaka school food poisoning

TOKYO

A major food poisoning outbreak has hit Kumatori Town in Osaka, Japan, affecting 633 students and staff members across eight schools. According to public broadcaster NHK, the victims began reporting severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.

Health officials have identified norovirus as the cause of the illness. The virus was detected in several students and, significantly, in employees of a local bakery that supplies bread for school lunches to every elementary and junior high school in the town.

Norovirus is highly contagious and often spreads rapidly in “close quarters” like schools. It can be transmitted through tiny particles of vomit or feces, often lingering on surfaces or transferring via the hands of food handlers. While most people recover within a few days without medical treatment, the sheer scale of this outbreak has prompted a serious investigation into hygiene standards at the supply facility.

Local authorities are reminding the public that foodborne illnesses can start within hours of eating contaminated food. They emphasize that strict handwashing and surface disinfection are the best defenses against the further spread of the virus.
