India has underlined its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) during the Executive Board session. Ambassador Harish P, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized six decades of partnership with UNDP, particularly in areas such as poverty reduction, climate resilience, SDG localization, and sustainability through the LiFE initiative.
Ambassador Harish stressed that UN reforms should prioritize development and enhance South-South cooperation within the UN system. The Indian mission highlighted the India-UN Development Partnership Fund as a key platform supporting collaborative projects and advancing global development goals.
The discussions came as India continues to expand its role in international institutions. On October 15, 2025, India was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the seventh time, serving the 2026–28 term. Ambassador Harish thanked member states for their support, noting the election reflects India’s ongoing commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The UNHRC, composed of 47 member states, is the primary intergovernmental body addressing human rights globally. It works to strengthen human rights protection, respond to emergencies, and provide guidance on implementing human rights policies on the ground.
India’s dual focus on sustainable development and human rights reflects its strategic vision of promoting inclusive growth and global responsibility. By reinforcing UNDP partnerships and participating actively in the Human Rights Council, India aims to contribute effectively to international development, climate action, and human rights protection worldwide.
