India Aims To Lead Global Semiconductor Industry

Blurb: India is set to develop its own semiconductor Intellectual Property in six key areas, aiming to become a major global chip nation by 2035, said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

India is making rapid strides in semiconductor development through the India Semiconductor Mission. Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said the country will create its own Intellectual Property (IP) in six critical systems: compute, RF, networking, power, sensor, and memory.

Speaking on the mission’s progress, Vaishnaw highlighted that 10 projects are under construction, production will begin for four projects this year, and 24 startups have already designed semiconductor chips. Around 315 educational institutions have trained students in chip design. He said access to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools under C-DAC has been crucial in helping India’s chip designers move from theory to practical, working projects.

The Minister set a 24-month target for developing simpler standard IPs like USB and PCIe and suggested a 36-month timeline for analog IPs, critical for real-world and strategic applications. Vaishnaw emphasised that India has the talent, including experts from the diaspora, to achieve this. He also proposed creating a repository for standard IPs under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, which could be mandated for chips used in India.

Vaishnaw said India is on track to become a major semiconductor player by 2029 and one of the world’s most important semiconductor nations by 2035, marking a significant leap in the global chip industry.
