Developments in Venezuela a ‘matter of concern’: India

India expressed concern over Venezuela after a U.S. military operation detained President Maduro, urging dialogue and regional stability

New Delhi

India on Sunday voiced “deep concern” over the fast-moving developments in Venezuela after the United States reportedly carried out a military operation, seized control in parts of the country, and detained President Nicolás Maduro along with his wife.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said India was closely following the situation and reaffirmed its commitment to the security and welfare of the Venezuelan people. New Delhi urged all parties involved to resolve differences peacefully through dialogue and to ensure regional peace and stability.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation. India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” the statement said.

The ministry further noted that the Indian Embassy in Caracas remains in contact with the Indian community in the country and will continue extending assistance as needed. However, India stopped short of directly naming the United States or commenting on sovereignty-related concerns, maintaining a cautious diplomatic tone.

The US administration, led by President Donald Trump, earlier announced that Maduro had been captured following a large-scale military operation targeting Caracas and other locations, describing the move as part of its campaign against “narco-terrorism”. Trump later stated that Washington would oversee Venezuela’s administration until a transition of power is completed.

Amid heightened uncertainty, India also issued a travel advisory, urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela in light of the escalating crisis.

Trump’s capture of Maduro signals US intent in its hemisphere

US President Donald Trump has signalled that the United States is willing to assert its influence in its own hemisphere, following a major military operation to abduct and arrest Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro. Maduro is currently held at a jail in New York after US special forces seized him and flew him out of the country on Saturday.

Trump described the raid as a modern update of the Monroe Doctrine, the 1823 policy in which President James Monroe declared Latin America off-limits to outside powers, then referring to Europe.

“The Monroe Doctrine is a big deal, but we’ve superseded it by a lot, by a real lot. They now call it the Donroe document,” Trump told a news conference, slapping his name on the policy principle. “American dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never be questioned again,” the US President added.
