Protests by VHP and Bajrang Dal over a Hindu man’s lynching in Bangladesh triggered clashes with Delhi Police
New Delhi
Chaos unfolded outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday when hundreds of protesters linked to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal clashed with the police while protesting the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh.
Waving saffron flags and raising slogans, the demonstrators attempted to march towards the high commission, breaching several barricades despite tight security arrangements. Anticipating the protest call given by the VHP, authorities had reinforced security in the high-security zone from early morning.
Police officials said extensive precautions were taken, including the deployment of nearly 15,000 personnel and the establishment of three layers of security to prevent protesters from reaching the diplomatic premises. According to an officer, the crowd was stopped around 800 metres away from the Bangladesh High Commission.
As part of crowd-control measures, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses were stationed on key roads to block the movement of protesters. Despite this, tensions remained high as demonstrators waved banners and placards condemning the Bangladesh government. One placard read, “Hindu rakt ki ek ek boond ka hisaab chahiye” (“Each drop of Hindu blood must be accounted for”).
The protest was sparked by the killing of 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, who was lynched on December 18 in Baluka, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Police said Das was first assaulted by a mob outside the factory and later hanged from a tree. His body was reportedly left near the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway and later set on fire.
Protesters demanded strict action against those responsible for the killing, urging both the Indian and Bangladesh governments to ensure justice.
Anti-B’desh protests erupt near Deputy High Commission
Kolkata
Hundreds of supporters of a pro-Hindutva outfit, protesting the alleged attack on minorities in the neighbouring nation, tried to march to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission here on Tuesday afternoon and clashed with the police when they were stopped by the personnel in uniform. Police resorted to baton charge to disperse the protestors after they breached barricades, both human and iron guard rails, in their attempts to move closer to the Deputy High Commission office at Beckbagan in central Kolkata.
