In a significant boost to rural health services, ten electric bikes were handed over to the District Health and Family Welfare Department under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in Chikkaballapura on Friday. The handover took place at the District Administration Building premises as part of an integrated rural development programme aimed at improving healthcare accessibility in remote areas.
The initiative was implemented under the Grameena Rising programme, organised in collaboration with United Way Bengaluru (UWBe) Mall. The programme seeks to enhance last-mile connectivity and support field-level health workers by providing eco-friendly and cost-effective transportation facilities.
District Commissioner P.N. Ravindra formally inaugurated the programme and flagged off the e-bikes, marking their official handover to the District Health and Family Welfare Officer’s office. Speaking on the occasion, officials noted that the e-bikes would play a crucial role in improving the mobility of health staff, especially in rural and semi-urban regions of the district.
Under the distribution plan, one e-bike has been allocated to Chikkaballapura taluk, three each to Chintamani and Gauribidanur taluks, one to Gudibande, and two to Sidlaghatta. The allocation was done keeping in mind the geographical spread and healthcare requirements of each taluk.
Officials said the e-bikes will be used by health personnel for field visits, monitoring health programmes, immunisation drives, maternal and child health services, and other public health-related activities. The use of electric vehicles is also expected to reduce fuel costs and contribute towards environmental sustainability.
Several senior officials were present during the handover ceremony, including Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. N. Bhaskar, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. S.S. Mahesh Kumar, District Health and Reproductive Officer Dr. Santosh, representatives and heads of United Way Bengaluru, along with health department staff and other officials.
District Commissioner P.N. Ravindra appreciated the support extended by United Way Bengaluru and stated that public-private collaboration is essential for strengthening grassroots service delivery. Health officials expressed confidence that the initiative would enhance efficiency and ensure better outreach to beneficiaries in rural areas.
