Labour Minister Santosh Lad assured the Karnataka Assembly that all pending labour card applications in Haveri district’s Hirekerur taluk will be processed soon. Responding to a query from ruling party MLA U.B. Banakar during the Question Hour, Lad said Hirekerur currently has 15,910 active labour cards, and 3,115 new applications have been received. Of these, 2,625 applications have already been cleared, marking an approval rate of nearly 80%, he added.
The minister noted that the remaining applications would undergo timely scrutiny. He highlighted that Haveri district had previously seen a large number of fraudulent labour cards. To prevent such irregularities, officials will now conduct in-person verification visits before approving new applications. Lad assured the House that any issues faced by applicants during this process would be addressed promptly.
During the discussion, MLA Banakar praised Minister Lad for his decisive action in cancelling fake labour cards in the district. He noted that the minister’s efforts had significantly curbed malpractice and ensured cleaner, more transparent operations within the labour department. Banakar added that the remaining fake cards in Haveri would also be eliminated soon, crediting Lad’s diligence for the progress.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that only eligible workers receive labour cards and said steps would continue to strengthen the verification mechanism and prevent misuse of welfare schemes.
