Pathan says Hardik’s comeback pushed Rinku out as World Cup core solidifies
NEW DELHI
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has described Rinku Singh as “unfortunate” after the left-hander was omitted from the T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa, hinting that the snub may signal the end of his road for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Rinku, who struck the winning boundary in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan just months ago, now finds himself sidelined despite limited opportunities during the Australia tour, where he featured in only one rain-hit game and didn’t get to bat.
Pathan believes Rinku’s exclusion has everything to do with Hardik Pandya’s return from injury. Washington Sundar has been brought in to strengthen India’s all-round depth, a clear indication of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav’s preference for multi-skilled cricketers. According to Pathan, the squad chosen for the South Africa series will form “90–95%” of India’s T20 World Cup core.
“Hardik Pandya is back so Rinku Singh is out. He is unfortunate, but this was obvious once Hardik was ready to return. This squad is 90–95% of what India will pick for the 2026 T20 World Cup,” Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
He further underlined Hardik’s importance in shaping India’s title ambitions next year, highlighting the balance he brings as a seam-bowling all-rounder and finisher — a role India value heavily in T20 cricket.
“India have to clear several things — whether they go with Bumrah, Hardik and Shivam Dube, and three spinners in Axar, Kuldeep and Varun. But Hardik’s role will be the most crucial for India’s progress in T20s and at the World Cup,” he added, emphasising that the team’s chances may hinge on Hardik and the finisher paired with him.
With clarity emerging around India’s core group, Rinku’s path back into contention now appears steeper than ever.
