Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh K. Patnaik, met Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to discuss strengthening security and law enforcement cooperation between the two nations. The meeting, held amid signs of stabilising bilateral relations, marked another step forward in rebuilding trust and expanding joint engagements.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa quoted Patnaik as saying he was honoured to meet Minister Anandasangaree, adding that the two discussed shared priorities in enhancing security collaboration. They also explored new frameworks for cooperation and mechanisms to reinforce ongoing engagements between India and Canada.

The meeting followed Patnaik’s visit to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, where he sought to boost India’s partnership with one of Canada’s most economically dynamic provinces. During the visit, Patnaik met key provincial leaders, including Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly; Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests; and Sunita Dhir, Parliamentary Secretary.

Patnaik also held productive discussions with Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, and Jagrup Brar, Minister of State for Mining and Critical Minerals. Talks centred on enhancing two-way investments in mining, critical minerals and energy, while also advancing cooperation in emerging sectors like quantum technologies, life sciences and gold exports. These discussions highlighted the growing economic complementarities between India and British Columbia.

In a significant milestone, the High Commissioner and his wife, Poonam Patnaik, recently visited Treaty 7 land — marking the first-ever visit by an Indian High Commissioner to the Indigenous region. The historic November 24 visit aimed at strengthening ties between Indigenous Nations in Canada and communities across India.

According to the Indian High Commission, the visit focused on exploring shared histories, cultural similarities and heritage connections, while identifying opportunities for future collaboration.
