A joyful school field trip turned into a heartbreaking tragedy near Sule Murki in Honnavar on Sunday, when a school bus carrying students overturned, leaving one student dead and more than 26 others injured. The accident happened as children from Mysuru’s Taralabalu Vidya Sanstha were travelling to Gokarna for an educational tour.
The deceased student has been identified as 15-year-old Pawan, an SSLC student from Mysuru. According to early reports, he died on the spot due to severe injuries. The injured children were immediately shifted to Honnavar Government Hospital for treatment. Doctors said the condition of a few students is serious, and they are being closely monitored by medical teams.
Police officials said the bus overturned after the driver reportedly lost control near Sule Murki Cross. The sudden turn caused the vehicle to topple, throwing several students off their seats. Local villagers and passers-by rushed to help the children and quickly alerted emergency services.
Authorities from the Honnavar police station soon arrived at the scene and began an investigation. They inspected the accident spot, questioned witnesses and checked the vehicle’s condition. A case has been registered, and officials will examine whether speeding, negligence or mechanical failure caused the mishap.
Parents, teachers and local residents expressed deep grief over the tragic loss of young Pawan. Many demanded stricter safety rules for school trips, including proper checks on drivers and buses before children are taken on long journeys.
