Srikkanth Slams Gambhir over ‘Chop-and-Change’ Selection

Srikkanth said India might draw but must fix selection issues and consistency

GUWAHATI

Former India captain and ex-BCCI chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth launched a scathing attack on head coach Gautam Gambhir over team selection after South Africa dominated the second Test in Guwahati. Srikkanth accused Gambhir of a “chop-and-change” approach, questioning the omission of consistent performers like Axar Patel.

“Why isn’t Axar Patel playing? Was he unfit? Every alternate match someone is making a debut. They can call it trial and error. Gautam Gambhir can say whatever he wants — I don’t care. I have been a former captain and former chairman of selectors. I know what I’m talking about,” Srikkanth said.

This latest outburst follows previous criticism of Gambhir’s selection of pacer Harshit Rana, which Gambhir dismissed as “shameful.” Srikkanth also condemned India’s overall performance, highlighting poor handling of South Africa’s spin and pace. “Kuldeep Yadav said nothing was happening on the pitch. Then we see Indians edging to slips against Harmer and Maharaj, and getting out to bouncers from Jansen — five wickets to short balls on a supposed ‘road,’” he said.

Srikkanth praised Simon Harmer’s classical spin, contrasting it with India’s spinners who “fire it flat,” and criticised captain Rishabh Pant’s reckless shot selection. “They will say it’s his natural game, but he is the captain. Shouldn’t he see the match situation?”

While acknowledging India could still fight for a draw, Srikkanth stressed that the team must address “wrong selection policies” and establish consistency. His remarks come as South Africa holds a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, leaving India under mounting pressure and keeping Gambhir firmly in the spotlight.

Srikkanth’s unapologetic stance underscores his belief that India’s cricketing fortunes hinge on stronger decision-making and a stable lineup, rather than continual experimentation at the top level.
