India Set to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad prepares for grand Commonwealth Games 2030 after major sports infrastructure upgrades

New Delhi

India is all set to formally receive the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games at the Commonwealth Sport’s General Assembly in Glasgow today. While the bid was largely assured over a month ago, the Assembly will officially confirm the decision, marking a milestone in India’s ambition to become a global multi-sport hub.

India last hosted the Games in 2010 in Delhi, but the 2030 edition will be staged in Ahmedabad, a city that has upgraded its sporting infrastructure at war footing over the last decade. Key venues include the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will feature an aquatics centre, football stadium, indoor arenas, and an athletes’ village for 3,000 participants. The Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, with a capacity of over one lakh, will also host events.

Ahmedabad has already showcased its organisational capabilities by hosting the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, Asian Aquatics Championships, AFC Under-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, and will host the Asian Weightlifting Championship and Asia Para-Archery Cup next year. The city is also set to co-host the 2029 World Police and Fire Games alongside Gandhinagar and Ekta Nagar.

India’s proposal highlights its commitment to a full medal programme, including wrestling, shooting, archery, kabaddi, and kho-kho, in contrast to the scaled-down 2026 Glasgow Games. Indian Olympic Association officials, including IOA President P. T. Usha and Joint Secretary Kunal, will represent the country during the formal announcement.

Interim Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare described Ahmedabad’s bid as “inspiring,” while the global body praised India’s sporting legacy and capacity to host a Games reflecting scale, diversity, and the Commonwealth values. The official announcement is expected around 6:30 p.m. IST.
