Karwar Excise Department officials intercepted a large-scale illegal liquor transport operation from Goa, seizing 649 liters of liquor and five two-wheelers worth a total of Rs. 7.62 lakh. The accused managed to flee the scene during the raid.
Acting on a tip-off, Excise personnel conducted a patrol near the Mudageri Dam forest area on Thursday morning around 9 a.m. They discovered that a significant quantity of liquor was being carried illegally in five two-wheelers. When officers attempted a raid, the smugglers abandoned the vehicles and the liquor before escaping.
The seized liquor included 304 liters of Goa penny, 284 liters of Goa liquor, and 60 liters of beer, with an estimated value of Rs. 3.62 lakh. The five two-wheelers used for transportation were valued at Rs. 4 lakh. The combined estimated value of the seized items stands at Rs. 7.62 lakh.
Excise officials confirmed that the operation disrupted a network smuggling liquor through forested routes from Goa. They have launched further search operations to track down the absconding accused and prevent similar illegal activities in the region.
Authorities have reiterated the need for public cooperation in reporting illegal liquor transport and assured strict action against violators. This seizure is being hailed as a major step in curbing smuggling activities in Karwar and surrounding areas.
