Coach Amol Muzumdar’s simple “finish well” message inspired India’s record 339-run chase into final.

India women’s team coach Amol Muzumdar said his only message before the semifinal against Australia was simple — “finish well.” The advice proved prophetic as India chased down a record 339 to reach their third Women’s ODI World Cup final.
“There were no big messages. We always told each other we need to finish well. We usually start well, but finishing has been our area to improve. Today was that day,” Muzumdar said after the win.
Jemimah Rodrigues led India’s charge with a sublime unbeaten 127, stitching a 167-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur (89). Muzumdar, who took charge last October, credited the team’s calm mindset and clarity of roles for the turnaround.
Before the semifinal, he had written a single line on the team’s whiteboard: “We just need one more run than them to reach the final.”
Known for his composed leadership, Muzumdar said the team’s response to earlier defeats against Australia, England and South Africa defined their character. “The next practice session after losing to England had more energy and intent. Sometimes failure is just a hiccup that teaches you more,” he said.
He praised his young players for rising to the occasion. “Kranti Goud has been sensational since her debut. Renuka Thakur complements her beautifully. And Jemi — I always knew she had the temperament to shift gears. Promoting her up the order made all the difference.”
The 50-year-old Mumbai stalwart also lauded his senior core. “Harman was calm and smiling all through. Smriti was cheerful, and Deepti kept motivating everyone. Everyone knows their role, and that helps.”
Reflecting on India’s stunning victory, Muzumdar smiled, “I’m still in a daze. The girls just finished well — that’s all we needed.”
