In a historic step for Southeast Asian diplomacy, Cambodia and Thailand formally signed a long-awaited peace agreement in Malaysia on Sunday, bringing years of border tensions to an end. The signing took place in Kuala Lumpur, with US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also ASEAN Chair, in attendance. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul officially endorsed the “Cambodia-Thailand Peace Accord,” which is being hailed as a milestone for regional stability. Senior diplomats, ASEAN officials, and representatives from several global powers witnessed the ceremony.

President Trump highlighted the importance of economic diplomacy in sustaining peace. He announced that alongside the peace deal, the United States had finalised a trade agreement with Cambodia and a strategic minerals partnership with Thailand. “When countries do business peacefully, conflicts can be avoided,” he said, stressing that economic ties support long-term stability.

Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed gratitude for Trump’s “decisive leadership” in facilitating the talks and thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for hosting and guiding the negotiations. “Disputes, no matter how complex, must be resolved peacefully,” Manet said, calling the accord a fresh chapter in relations between Phnom Penh and Bangkok.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul echoed these remarks, appreciating Trump’s efforts and condolences for the late Thai Queen Mother. He described the agreement as a source of hope for a stable and prosperous future.

The accord sets out provisions for joint border security, development zones, and a bilateral peace commission to monitor implementation, ensuring both nations maintain a lasting and cooperative relationship.
