Religious Tattoo Advisory
Gangtok
The Sikkim Ecclesiastical Department has issued an advisory cautioning people against depicting religious symbols in tattoos in a disrespectful manner, following concerns raised during a recent event. Officials said some tattoos displayed at the International Tattoo Convention, held at Saramsa from October 9-12, portrayed deities in ways considered offensive, particularly when placed below the waist.
The advisory emphasised that such depictions hurt religious sentiments and go against the faith, beliefs, and customs of the state. It urged all individuals, artists, and organisers to be mindful of cultural sensitivities when creating or showcasing artwork involving religious symbols. “No artistic work should be made or exhibited that could disrespect any community or hurt religious feelings,” the advisory stated.
The Department highlighted the importance of exercising care and caution while representing images related to religious traditions, noting that respect for local beliefs is paramount. The advisory also stressed that artists and participants must ensure that their creations do not inadvertently offend or provoke communities.
Following public outrage over the tattoos, the organisers of the convention formally apologised to the public and the Ecclesiastical Department. They acknowledged the mistake and expressed regret for the unintended disrespect to religious sentiments.
The advisory serves as a reminder for artists and the general public to uphold cultural respect in all forms of creative expression. It reflects the state’s commitment to protecting religious harmony while promoting awareness about the significance of sensitivity towards sacred symbols.
