India captain Shubman Gill expressed pride after guiding his team to a 2-0 Test series win over the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. India chased down 121 runs on the final day to seal a seven-wicket victory, earning 12 World Test Championship points.
“It’s a great honour to lead India, and I’m getting used to it,” Gill said after his first series win as captain. He spoke about the challenges of making bold decisions and managing players efficiently.
Gill explained his decision to enforce the follow-on after India gained a 270-run lead, saying the move aimed to avoid a long final-day chase. He also mentioned the importance of preparing young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy for overseas matches, emphasizing the need to groom players for tough conditions abroad.
Speaking about his batting at number four, Gill said, “Batting has been part of me since childhood. I just focus on making the right decisions to help the team win.”
Looking ahead, Gill is set to lead India in the upcoming Australia white-ball series starting October 19 in Perth—his first ODI assignment as captain.
West Indies skipper Roston Chase praised his team’s resilience despite the loss, highlighting centuries from John Campbell and Shai Hope and their ability to extend the match to the fifth day. He said the team would use this performance as a confidence boost for upcoming series.
