In Bagepalli taluk, a young couple, Ambarish and Pratibha from Sangatapalli village, secretly married in a temple despite strong opposition from Pratibha’s family. Enraged by the elopement, Pratibha’s parents went to Ambarish’s home, creating a violent scene. They carried Pratibha’s belongings and attempted to set the house on fire. Ambarish’s mother, Bayyamma, intervened but was severely burned when the couple’s parents poured petrol on her and set her alight. Bayyamma is currently receiving treatment at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. Bagepalli police have registered a case against Pratibha’s parents and are investigating the incident.
On the same day, another tragedy struck in Gauribidanur. Swarna, a 22-year-old woman from Nagireddi locality, took her own life by consuming poison in her Bengaluru college hostel. She had been struggling with depression following her father’s suicide three months prior. Despite medical treatment at the district hospital, Swarna succumbed to her injuries late at night. Bengaluru police have recorded statements from her mother and are investigating the case.
These heartbreaking events underscore the devastating consequences of familial opposition, grief, and societal pressures, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness, mental health support, and conflict resolution for young individuals and families in the region.
