Maxwell Optimistic for T20I Comeback after Wrist Surgery

Melbourne

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is optimistic about making a return for the latter half of India’s upcoming T20I series after undergoing surgery on his fractured right wrist. The 36-year-old sustained the injury during a net session ahead of the T20 series against New Zealand when a shot from teammate Mitchell Owen struck his wrist.

Maxwell, who will miss the first two T20Is on October 29 and 31, had opted for surgery to fast-track his recovery and improve his chances of playing in the final three matches in Hobart (Nov 2), Gold Coast (Nov 6), and Brisbane (Nov 8). “The surgery gives me a slim chance to play some part in the India series, and if not, I’ll be ready earlier for the BBL,” Maxwell said, emphasizing his focus on managing pain and regaining wrist strength.

Having recently had his cast removed, he now wears a protective plastic splint and has begun basic movements under a hand therapist’s guidance. Maxwell acknowledged the injury was partly due to an unlucky impact and said it had made him cautious while bowling to power hitters in nets.

Reflecting on his form, Maxwell highlighted his recent performances, including a match-winning 62 against South Africa and a 107 in the domestic One-Day Cup. He also expressed excitement for the upcoming Big Bash League, where he will captain Melbourne Stars. Maxwell welcomed the signing of former India spinner R. Ashwin with Sydney Thunder, praising the veteran’s experience and the boost he brings to the tournament.
