EC Releases Final ‘Electoral Roll’ in Bihar Ahead of Assembly Polls

“People can look up their names by clicking on the link voters.eci.gov.in,” the Election Commission said in a post on social media

Patna

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced the publication of the “final electoral roll” in Bihar, completing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process that considered all claims and objections to the draft lists. The Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar shared the update on social media, tagging the EC, and urged citizens to verify their names at voters.eci.gov.in.

State-wide details of the final list are yet to be released. The draft roll had listed 7.24 crore voters after the deletion of roughly 65 lakh names categorized as “absent,” “shifted,” or “deceased.” In Patna district, covering 14 assembly segments, the updated roll shows about 48.15 lakh voters, marking an increase of 1.63 lakh compared with the August 1 draft. Female voters in the district number 22.75 lakh, with Digha constituency having the highest electorate at 4.56 lakh.

The Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be announced soon. The SIR exercise, which the EC plans to implement nationwide, has sparked controversy. Opposition parties, some approaching the Supreme Court, allege that the process aimed to wrongfully delete voters less likely to support the ruling BJP-led NDA. In response, BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, defended SIR as necessary to remove “infiltrators” allegedly shielded by the INDIA bloc, ensuring integrity in the electoral process.

The release of the final electoral roll marks a key step toward the forthcoming Assembly polls, enabling citizens to confirm their voting eligibility and preparing the state for a smooth election process.
