Bengaluru markets see festival rush

Festival shopping surge

Markets across Bengaluru were bustling with activities as residents prepare for Ayudha Pooja and Vijayadashami, major festivals celebrated in Karnataka. Shoppers flocked to local markets to buy flowers, fruits, banana stalks, and other essential items for the worship of tools, vehicles, and instruments during Ayudha pooja.

The demand surge, coupled with recent rains, has caused a sharp increase in flower prices. Commonly used flowers like Sevanthige, Kanakambara, Mallige, and Gulabi have seen prices double or even triple compared to normal rates. For instance, chrysanthemums are now priced between Rs 300 and Rs 400 per kilogram, up from Rs 50-60. Crossandra costs Rs 2,000-2,500 per bunch, jasmine Rs 1,500-2,000 per kg, and roses Rs 400-450 per kg. Banana stalks have risen to Rs 60-100 per pair, while ash gourd costs Rs 50-60 each.

Shoppers expressed concern over the price hike. Sudha noted, “Price hikes on flowers during festivals are common nowadays. They exploit demand to increase business profits.” Another customer, Rupa, added, “With such high prices on fruits and flowers, it becomes difficult for lower-income families to celebrate the festival properly.”

Traders acknowledged the rising costs but cited previous losses as a reason for the price increase. Lakshmamma, a local vendor, said, “Lemons used to sell for Rs 10 per kilogram. Dumped stock in earlier years caused losses, and now even high-income buyers ask for reasonable prices.” Despite the surge, shoppers continued their preparations, ensuring the city remains vibrant and festive ahead of the celebrations, highlighting the enthusiasm and cultural significance of Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami in Bengaluru.
