Self-Styled Godman Chaitanyananda sent to 5 day police custody

New Delhi

A Delhi court on Sunday sent Chaitanyananda Saraswati, a self‑styled godman accused of sexual harassment, to five days’ police custody for questioning. Duty Magistrate Ravi ordered the custody after hearing the case.

Saraswati, 62, was arrested from a hotel in Agra on Sunday morning. He is accused of sexually harassing 17 women students at a private institute in Delhi. Police said victims alleged that he molested them, sought favours, and monitored their movements with cameras, including some in bathrooms. Around 16 women have lodged complaints, and several other claims are being examined.

The defence argued that statements of 16–20 women were already recorded and opposed custodial custody. They said Saraswati suffers from diabetes and anxiety, had his robes taken, and claimed police custody was aimed at harassment. The complainant’s lawyer insisted custody was needed to confront him with victim statements and evidence.

Police said Saraswati had not cooperated in the investigation, withheld passwords for his iPad and iCloud, and operated multiple bank accounts under different names. Documents found suggested forgery and misuse. Over ₹8 crore in accounts and deposits linked to him have been frozen. Investigators said he withdrew ₹50 lakh after the FIR was filed. Fake visiting cards suggesting UN and BRICS links were recovered.

The case is part of ongoing probes after allegations surfaced of harassment, cheating, and forgery against Saraswati. The police said investigation will continue during his custody period.
