Puttur
The rape and cheating case filed in Puttur against engineering student Krishna J. Rao has taken a new turn, with DNA tests confirming that he is the biological father of the complainant’s child.
The complainant, a former classmate of the accused, gave birth on June 28 this year. She alleged that Rao established physical relations with her multiple times since late 2024 after assuring her of marriage. When she informed his family about the pregnancy, they initially agreed to the marriage but later refused. Her family then lodged a complaint.
Rao, son of local BJP leader and Puttur City Municipal Council member P.G. Jagannivas Rao, was arrested on July 5 and booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for repeated rape and sexual intercourse by deceit. His father was also arrested for allegedly helping him evade arrest.
The Karnataka High Court granted Rao bail on September 3, observing that the relationship “appeared consensual,” but directed that the issue be decided at trial.
Police have now completed their investigation and filed the final report. The DNA confirmation is expected to be a key factor in court.
Dalit and women’s groups in the region have been closely monitoring the case, saying it highlights how social influence and political connections can complicate justice delivery in sensitive matters. The trial is expected to begin shortly in Puttur court.
