A gas cylinder explosion in Gadiganur, Hospet taluk on Saturday morning left eight people injured and destroyed a house. The owner, Kavita, is in critical condition, while the rest of the family escaped serious harm, according to the rural police.
The house, belonging to lawyer Halappa, is located next to the Hospet-Bellary National Highway. About 10 people were inside at the time. Reports indicate a smell of gas was noticed in the morning. When Kavita attempted to light the stove, a sudden fire triggered the explosion, destroying nearly 60 percent of the house. The injured include Kavita (32), Halappa (42), Gangamma (63), Mailarappa (48), Mallamma (40), Kaveri (18), Kavya (15), and Nikhil (13).
Firefighters and Hospet police rushed to the scene and arranged for the injured to be admitted to Toranagallu Hospital, preventing further damage.
According to reports, Kavita hurriedly turned on the cylinder to prepare for Navratri Puja and lit the stove after a delay. By that time, several cylinders were filled with gas, and lighting the fire caused the explosion. The blast damaged the walls, leaving the house uninhabitable.
