Haveri
A total of 55 cases of atrocities against Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities have been registered across Haveri district this year, informed Prashanth Varagappa, Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department. He shared these details during the Control of Atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and District Awareness Committee Meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Hall.
Varagappa stated that the government is taking SC atrocities seriously. Of the 55 cases registered between January and September 20, 2025, compensation has been provided to victims in 53 cases.
Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Mahantesh Danamma emphasized the importance of creating awareness at the gram panchayat level about the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act and its provisions. She instructed officials to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the district and to gather detailed atrocity data taluk-wise and police station-wise.
Committee members raised local concerns, including lack of cemetery access in Bharadi village, missing road to the cemetery in Maradura, pending RTCs for 20 SC families in Savanoor, dilapidated water storage tank causing waterlogging in Haravi, and the need for a new Anganwadi in Hiremallihalli SC Colony.
Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mahantesh directed officials to address these issues promptly within legal frameworks. Additional District SP Lakshman Shirakola, Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary Puneeth, Deputy Divisional Officer Shubham Shukla, and District Public Prosecutor Saroja Kudalamath were also present.
