India targets to reduce imports in hydrogen production

India’s green hydrogen push centers on electrolyzers, with solar-powered plants, government subsidies, growing hydrogen infrastructure, and automakers developing fuel cell vehicles alongside EVs

Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, said on Friday that India’s focus is on reducing imports in hydrogen production while pushing ahead with its National Hydrogen Mission. The government aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of hydrogen fuel by 2030, supported by a ₹19,200 crore programme.

Saraswat explained that research and development is underway on hydrogen charging stations, high-pressure cylinders, storage, and transportation. He noted that three “Hydrogen Valley” projects—a 50 MW, 100 MW, and 500 MW plant—are being developed in different regions with industrial participation.

Electrolyzers remain central to India’s green hydrogen push. Many plants are using solar energy for production, while others rely on grid power. The government is providing subsidies for setting up electrolyzer and fuel cell plants. Several automobile firms are developing fuel cell vehicles alongside battery-powered models, while infrastructure for hydrogen recharging is expanding with nine centres being built.

Saraswat said India is also exploring hydrogen from nuclear energy, calling it the cleanest and cheapest form. Work in steam methane reforming and blending hydrogen with CNG is also progressing. He highlighted that a bus has already run successfully on hydrogen-CNG fuel.

Currently, the cost of green hydrogen is $4–5 per unit, and the goal is to lower it to $1. This requires cheaper electrolyzers, reduced power costs, and domestic development of critical materials. International collaborations, including a hydrogen alliance, are supporting this effort.
