“Many countries in the world have adopted their own ideas for democracy. But India is the best democracy in the world,” said Karnataka Mineral Development Corporation Limited Chairman and MLA GS Patil.

He spoke while inaugurating the International Democracy Day celebration on Monday. “After our country got independence, it was Dr BR Ambedkar’s idea that democracy was needed for the benefit of the citizens, which enabled the country to remain a united India. In 2007, all the members of the United Nations decided to promote democracy. Then the International Day of Democracy has been celebrated since 2008. This is an important step in establishing a governance system between the government and the citizens. Dr BR Ambedkar’s thoughts need to be fully achieved,” he said.

MLA Dr Chandru Lamani said that democracy is a government under the control of the citizens. “It is possible for everyone to be independent under the Constitution. All citizens in the society have to be within the framework of the law. Even a respected person who violates the law has to face appropriate punishment. The value of the Constitution can only be achieved when people are educated. If there was no reservation in the Constitution, the lower class citizens would not have been able to come into the mainstream of society,” he said.

Dr Chandru Lamani opined that more awareness about democracy needs to be created in every village of the district. Deputy Commissioner CN Sridhar preached the preamble to the Constitution. District Level Guarantee Scheme Implementation Authority Chairman BB Asuti, Government Pre-University College Lecturer HA Kurnool also spoke.

“Especially, economic and social equality needs to be brought. An important step should be taken to accept the democratic system even in countries where democracy is not in force.  He said that peace and equality are provided in democracy,” GS Patil said.
