Lapang’s humble beginnings and service inspired many; a 2024 statue honors his lasting impact in Ri-Bhoi
Shillong
Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, one of the state’s most respected political leaders, passed away at a hospital in Shillong on Friday night. He was 91.
Born on April 10, 1934, Lapang rose from humble beginnings to become a four-time chief minister between 1992 and 2008. His political journey began in 1972, when he was elected as an independent MLA from Nongpoh to the first Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Over the decades, he held several ministerial posts before leading the state government.
Known for his simplicity and humility, Lapang was admired across party lines for his consensus-building approach during Meghalaya’s coalition-driven politics. His tenure as chief minister focused on improving governance, expanding development initiatives, and maintaining communal harmony in the hill state.
Before entering politics, Lapang worked as a road labourer and later as a school sub-inspector—experiences that kept him connected to the struggles of ordinary citizens. Even after retiring from active politics, he remained a guiding figure and elder statesman. In 2024, a life-size statue was unveiled in Ri-Bhoi district to honour his lifelong contributions.
News of his passing has led to an outpouring of grief and tributes. Leaders described him as “a leader who never forgot his roots” and “an embodiment of perseverance and service.” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with senior leaders from the Northeast, is expected to visit his residence to pay respects.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family. Lapang leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and a political journey that shaped Meghalaya for more than three decades.
