The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has introduced a heartwarming puppy adoption programme that is receiving widespread appreciation in the community. The initiative seeks to find loving homes for stray puppies while addressing the increasing issue of stray dogs. In its first 15 days, the programme has successfully placed 48 puppies in permanent homes.
Designed to make adoption easy and safe, the programme includes thorough vetting to ensure the puppies are placed in caring environments. HDMC also offers initial veterinary care, including vaccinations and health check-ups. The community’s response has been highly encouraging, with many residents praising the effort. The initiative not only brings happiness to pet parents but also promotes compassion and responsibility toward animals. HDMC hopes that more adoptions will occur as awareness spreads.
Social activist Umesh Dushi commended the programme as a prime example of how local bodies can collaborate with communities to address social and environmental concerns.
Dr. Sridhar Dandappanavar of HDMC noted that the programme works with 16 NGOs, eight of which focus on animal welfare, helping spread the word through social media and other channels.
Ramesh Bajantri from Humane World for Animals explained that NGO teams track stray dogs and puppies, making them available for adoption once they reach two months of age. The demand for puppies continues to grow, and HDMC is striving to expand the programme further.
