Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn has formally endorsed Anutin Charnvirakul as the country’s new Prime Minister, clearing the way for his cabinet formation and parliamentary policy address. The announcement was made by House Secretary-General Arpath Sukhanunth during a ceremony at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.

Anutin, leader of the opposition Bhumjaithai Party, secured the premiership on Friday after winning a parliamentary vote against Chaikasem Nitisiri of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. His election followed a court ruling that removed Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office over an ethics breach.

Of the 490 lawmakers present, Anutin received 311 votes, surpassing the required majority. In his remarks, the 58-year-old expressed gratitude for public support conveyed through MPs. He pledged to “work hand in hand with all parties” to advance the nation and correct missed opportunities. He further promised strict enforcement of law and measures against abuse of power.

A former construction magnate, Anutin has led the Bhumjaithai Party since 2012. Over the years, he has served as deputy prime minister and held portfolios including interior and public health.

The opposition People’s Party, controlling nearly a third of the lower house, announced support for Anutin on the condition that parliament dissolves within four months for fresh elections.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Pheu Thai-led government’s attempt to dissolve parliament was struck down on legal grounds, allowing the leadership vote to proceed.

Anutin now faces the task of assembling a coalition and steering Thailand toward political stability after months of uncertainty.
