“Sexual minorities, despite facing humiliation and hardships, continue striving to lead dignified lives, and it is the responsibility of society to overcome prejudices, recognize their abilities, and treat them with respect,” said rights activist and Ondede founder Dr. Akkai Padmashali.

She made these remarks while inaugurating a seminar on “Challenges and Struggles of Sexual Minorities in India,” jointly organized by Rani Channamma University and Ondede. Dr. Akkai highlighted that sexual minorities often face exclusion, abuse, and violence at home, in neighborhoods, and in schools, and stressed that universities must uphold their dignity, ensure freedom, and integrate related issues into academic curricula.

During the event, the book Bharavase by Ondede trustee Laxman Kanakuntla was released by University Registrar Santosh Kamagouda. Malavika, introducing the book, noted that society often stereotypes sexual minorities as beggars or sex workers, ignoring their talents and achievements; the book highlights success stories from the community to challenge such prejudices.

Registrar Kamagouda praised their struggles for dignity and announced that Rani Channamma University has introduced reservations for sexual minority candidates across departments, along with schemes like laptop distribution and other empowerment initiatives.

Abhida Begum, President of Karnataka Antaralingi Association, Bengaluru, and Kiran Bedi of the Humanities Foundation participated as resource persons. Prof. Ashok A. D’Souza, Dr. Devata D. Gastiyar, and Surekha were also present.
