Bengaluru woman ends life over dowry, affair

A tragic case of alleged dowry harassment and marital discord has come to light after a 28-year-old woman, identified as Poojashree, died by suicide at her residence in Sidedehalli under Bagalagunte police station limits on Monday morning.

Poojashree, employed as a cashier in a private bank, had been married to Nandeesh for three years. The couple also has a young daughter. Police said the marriage had been strained due to repeated quarrels between the two, often sparked by Poojashree questioning her husband about his alleged extramarital relationship. Each confrontation reportedly led to fresh demands for dowry.

Despite several mediations by family members and even intervention at the local police station, the harassment is said to have continued. On September 1, Poojashree was found hanging in her house, leaving her family devastated.

Her mother, Chandrakala, lodged a complaint alleging that Nandeesh constantly tortured her daughter both for dowry and because of his illicit affair. “Even after giving assurances at the police station that he would take care of her, he continued harassing her. My daughter could not bear it any longer,” she told police. Based on the complaint, Bagalagunte police have registered a case against Nandeesh under Section 304B (dowry death) of the IPC and relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Investigation is underway, and police have said further action will be taken following the completion of inquiries.
