Manuel Akanji leaves Man City for Inter

Milan

Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has joined Italian football club Inter Milan on a one-year loan from Manchester City. The 29-year-old made the move official on Tuesday and will now play under Inter’s new head coach, Christian Chivu.

Akanji joined Manchester City in September 2022 from Borussia Dortmund and went on to play 136 matches for the English side. He was a key player during City’s historic treble-winning 2022–23 season and was involved in several big games, including the Champions League final against Inter, which City won.

In total, Akanji helped City win seven trophies, including two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Community Shield, and a FIFA Club World Cup. He scored in City’s 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final and played a vital role in the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

Last season, he played 40 matches, with his last appearance coming in a Club World Cup loss to Al-Hilal. His departure follows another major exit from Manchester City, as goalkeeper Ederson joined Fenerbahce after winning 18 trophies with the club.
