Leaders to discuss clean energy, data ties; Wong to meet Indian officials
New Delhi
India and Singapore are set to sign five agreements to strengthen cooperation in shipping, civil aviation, and space during Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s three-day visit to New Delhi beginning Tuesday. This is Wong’s first visit to India as prime minister, and the focus will be on expanding economic engagement. On Thursday, PM Modi and PM Wong will virtually inaugurate a new container terminal in Maharashtra, where Singapore’s PSA International has invested over USD one billion.
Singapore remains a major investor in India, with cumulative investments since 2014 reaching USD 175 billion, including USD 60 billion after the Covid pandemic. The visit also coincides with 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The Ministry of External Affairs said the trip reaffirms the commitment to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership.
During the visit, both leaders will discuss regional and global issues, along with future collaboration in green hydrogen, green ammonia, and possible solar energy exports through an underwater cable project, though technical challenges remain. A financial data regulatory sandbox at Gujarat’s Gift City has already been created as part of broader cooperation on data connectivity.
Wong, accompanied by senior ministers and officials, will meet President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and other Union ministers. His visit follows the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held on August 13, which prepared the ground for stronger bilateral ties.
