World Running Out of Time on Climate Action: COP30 Chief

New Delhi

The world faces the risk of “running out of time” to address climate change unless countries cooperate, COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago warned on Monday, emphasizing the urgent need to bridge political and financial divides between developed and developing nations.

Criticizing US President Donald Trump’s reluctance to engage in climate talks, Correa do Lago noted, “The problem is that he does not want to discuss emissions from specific countries.” Trump has twice withdrawn the US from the Paris Agreement, with reentry only occurring under the Biden administration.

Highlighting the longstanding divide between wealthy and poorer nations, Correa do Lago said developing countries stress the need for support in pursuing cleaner growth, while developed nations often focus on commitments without sufficient assistance. “This divide is very strong…science tells us we have very little time,” he added, urging that climate action should simultaneously create jobs, improve lives, and promote a greener economy.

COP30, scheduled for November in Belem, Brazil, will be the first UN climate summit hosted in the Amazon region. COP30 CEO Ana Toni highlighted that pollution control offers a chance to link climate goals with health and development, focusing on air quality, methane reduction, and cleaner transport in developing nations. Leaders from nearly 200 countries are expected to review progress since the Paris Agreement and strengthen commitments on emissions, finance, and clean energy transition.
