Electors filed 2.53 lakh claims; 40,630 resolved. Bihar saw 16.56 lakh claims, 91,462 disposed
New Delhi
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced that only 144 claims and objections were filed by political parties in Bihar on the draft roll of 7.24 crore electors, as the submission window closed. Among these, the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation submitted 118 requests — 15 for inclusion and 103 for exclusion. The BJP filed 16 objections for exclusion, while the RJD submitted 10 requests for inclusion.
In contrast, electors themselves submitted nearly 2.53 lakh claims and objections for voter inclusion or removal of ineligible names. Of these, 40,630 have already been resolved. In total, 16.56 lakh claims and objections were filed by individuals across Bihar, with 91,462 disposed of so far.
The filing process was part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which began on June 24 and published its draft on August 1. The deadline for filing claims ended on September 1.
The ECI responded to criticism from Congress and RJD, who alleged the revision process was aimed at disenfranchisement. The Commission clarified that generic complaints without proper forms were not counted as valid. It stressed that names cannot be deleted without an official order from Electoral Registration Officers after due inquiry.
The Commission further stated that the draft roll, published on August 1, included reasons for non-inclusion, available on district websites and the CEO portal in searchable form using EPIC numbers. Citizens could file claims through Form 6 with Aadhaar or objections through Form 7 until September 1.
The ECI reiterated that even non-electors can file objections within a constituency if they provide a declaration under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.
