Rajasthan Royals confirmed on Saturday that head coach Rahul Dravid has stepped down ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Dravid, who signed a multi-year deal in September 2024, had joined the Royals soon after guiding India to the Men’s T20 World Cup title.
The franchise revealed that during a recent review, Dravid was offered a broader role within the team’s structure. However, the former India captain declined the opportunity. In a statement, the Royals praised Dravid’s lasting impact, saying his leadership shaped players, strengthened team values, and left a strong cultural influence.
Dravid’s connection with the franchise goes back over a decade. He captained the Royals in 2012 and 2013, and later mentored them in 2014 and 2015. His return in 2025 sparked hopes of replicating their 2008 title-winning campaign. However, the season ended in disappointment, with the team finishing ninth after winning just four of their 14 league games. Injuries to regular skipper Sanju Samson added to their struggles, forcing young Riyan Parag to lead the side in several matches.
Dravid’s latest stint with the Royals has now lasted less than a year, and reports suggest internal differences may have contributed to his decision to leave. Attention will now turn to his future role in cricket, while the Royals look to rebuild for IPL 2026.
